7 Tips for Beach Running

7 Tips for Beach Running

Summer has arrived! While you are planning your summer travels to the beach, don't forget to take advantage of this beautiful running weather! Here are 7 quick tips for running on the beach:

Tip #1.  Find the right beach. The ideal "perfect" beach is a clean beach that is less crowded and has at least a mile of shoreline.

Tip #2. Pick your sand. The softer the sand, the dryer, which will make your run more difficult and make you exert more energy. The wetter the sand, the more packed, and the more steady of a workout you will have.

Tip #3. Check the tide charts. If you are aiming to run on wet sand, make sure you run at low tide. As the tide comes rolling in, the wet sand will become limited.

Tip #4. Running with shoes, or to go barefoot. If you are running on wet sand, it will be sturdy enough to run with shoes. If running on dry sand, barefoot is the way to go.  If you choose to run barefoot, do so with caution. Your feet are used to the support of your shoes, so you might notice some muscle aches and fatigue on your run.

Tip #5. Be cautious.  If it's your first time running on sand, don't push yourself to the extremes. Enjoy the workout, stay in the wet sand and don't be afraid to slow down your pace. Running hard your first time around could lead to injury.

Tip #6. Pack sun protection. While running along the beach is beautiful, a sunburn is not. Water acts as a reflector for the sun, so make sure you pack extra sunscreen and bring your hat and sunglasses.

Tip #7. Leave your headphones at home. There is no better soundtrack than the waves crashing up onto shore. And for all of those who's technology somehow always becomes water's best friend, you'll thank us.
