Introducing Gone For a Run's Running Coach Megan

Megan Cunningham is an elite distance runner competing in distances from the 3,000m to the marathon. She began running in the 4th grade so she could compete at the district track meet and miss a day of school. She continued to compete annually in both the district cross country and track meets until she entered high school in 2009. This is when she began actually training for the first time and fell in love with the sport. Growing up outside of St. Louis, Missouri, she attended her local high school and competed in both cross country and track. Following high school, she was fortunate to continue competing for the University of Missouri, where she ran cross country and track while pursuing a pre-med degree in Biology. Megan graduated with her Bachelor’s degree in 2013 and began medical school that fall.

Megan Training After a Traumatic Injury

While competing for the University of Missouri, Megan and her family were involved in a traumatic car accident which left her unsure if she’d ever be able to walk, much less run, again. Through patience, perseverance, and a bit of stubbornness, Megan returned to the track after nine months off of any running. Megan was able to overcome her injuries and walked away from her collegiate career a two time SEC Conference Champion (5k and 10k) and a two time NCAA Academic All-American.

Megan Winning Virginia Beach Half Marathon

Post-collegiality, Megan has shifted her focus towards racing on the roads as well as coaching fellow runners. Most recently, Megan won the Virginia Beach Rock N’ Roll Half Marathon and competed in the 2020 USA Olympic Marathon Trials. Megan’s coaching approach is holistic and focuses not only on the physical aspects of training but on the overall health and wellness of the individual as well. Megan prefers a 1-on-1 approach developing each athlete no matter what level to help them progress and achieve their goals.
